Case Studies - Horses

I work with horses on physical issues, emotional issues and many other things.
My Spirit Teacher is a great horseman. He bonds with the horses right away and helps them reveal their inner feelings. He has shown me that every horse is connected to a Herd of Spirit Horses. Each breed seems to have its own Herd, and each Herd has its own culture and healing stories - just like each tribe of people has. I have spent the most time with the Icelandic, Arab and Western American horse herds. (Paints, Quarter Horses and grade ranch-type horses tend to be together). I am continually exploring the Herds and learning each one's stories. Someday I'll even write a book.

Kolur the Magic Icelandic Gelding?

My name is Elmar. I'm a middle aged Icelandic gelding. I live with Carla and Don at their farm in Veneta, Oregon. I have an older "brother" named Kolur. He's really not my brother, but we look like twins and even Mom confuses us sometimes. Kolur had some deep seated problems when he moved here. He would bolt whenever he felt his rider was unstable, and he would stumble really badly all the time!

Mom talked to him and learned that he had a big crash when he lived in Iceland. He fell off a cliff, and the girl on him got hurt. Mom gave him a soul retrieval and took him to the herd of Icelandic Spirit Horses. He got better right away and has been building confidence ever since. She worked on his stumbling too, and learned from the Spirits that his spine was out at the base of his neck. A chiropractor fixed him up, and with regular massage and a great farrier, he hasn't stumbled in months. He's really a great friend, and I'm glad he is better!

Here's Jark, our littlest brother. He moved here September 2000, and he is just learning to carry Mom around. She is always doting on him and giving him clicker treats. I like to push him around.

.A Horse's Soul RetrievalElmar - An Icelandic horse's soul retrieval:

Elmar is a nine year old Icelandic gelding who was raised in a large herd in the homeland. He ran with his herd for 4 years, then was used as a trekking horse for tourists. Until he came to America when he was 8, he never was far from a big pack of furry horses just like himself.  His transition to his new home was fairly easy, as he lived on a large Icelandic horse farm again in a large herd. Then he was sold to us, and had to live with only our one other horse, and dominant one at that. Elmar was depressed, unresponsive and generally down-in-the-dumps. He pulled away from his Don's touch, and tried to "hide" his head under his giant mane.  I did a soul retrieval for him and retrieved several soul parts - one that had been separated when he was a colt (a nasty horse was mean to him), one that separated during the stress of importation, and finally, the whole herd of horses he lived with in Iceland.

Elmar's response was swift. He regained his sense of his own power and became much more trusting. Of course he still needed to adjust to his new surroundings, but he was quick to do so. And when circumstances forced him to live alone for several months, he was complacent and cooperative.

Angel is a large mare who lives in Western Washington, where it rains and rains. She had developed cracked heels in both front feet and had been lame for some time. She had been vetted and had been treated by the farrier without relief. Her people asked me to help. In my journey, my spirit ally treated her hooves with herbs and healing water, and he told her a story of the great wild horse herd. The next day I received this e-mail from Angel's person:

Happy Thursday Carla!!
Oh my, I just couldn't wait to tell you this. Now, Angel is the "old style" Morgan, big body type like a small percheron, and when she walks, you know she's around!! Well, recently with her pain, every time she took a step her head would bob literally 3-4 inches, so she walked like a chicken! Last night after we spoke, I went out to help bring in the horses for dinner, and tuck them in for the night. Now Angel is herd boss, and always in first position, when it's feeding time, she resembles a locomotive coming across the pasture, but not last night. It was getting dark, and I couldn't see well that far, I thought it odd that she didn't come running when I called"dinner!". So, we let everyone else in, and she was still out there grazing away, at the very farthest corner. I walked out to see if all was ok, calling to her. When I was about halfway across, she started walking towards me, and there was something missing!!!! THE BOB!!!! At first I didn't believe my eyes, it was dark. As she came up to me, she stopped, I gave her a big hug, scratched her withers, and said, come on Ang, let's go eat. She looked at me with those huge eyes and walked quietly with me the whole way, stayed right at my shoulder, and she was walking NORMAL!!!!! I was so stunned I almost tripped on a rock 'cause I couldn't take my eyes off her. When we got to the gate, I let her through, and instead of jogging up to the barn, she took 4 steps, stopped and waited for me to latch it. I called Kevin to come see, and he got the biggest smile on his face you've ever seen in your life! We tucked her in, packed her feet, etc., like we were instructed, kissed her good night, and walked like zombie's into the house. Now, this behavior may not sound like anything out of the ordinary to most people, but Angel is very food motivated and she has NEVER walked to dinner unless haltered, and to have her stand at the gate and wait is totally unheard of. Was this her way of expressing her gratitude, making sure I saw she was feeling better, and letting me know she understood how much we wanted to help her get better? (I'd like to think so). I felt she would improve greatly with your help, but I never expected such a drastic change. I'm sure we have a ways to go yet, but after two months of strain on her neck from all that head bobbing, it was so wonderful to see her walk freely it brought tears to my eyes. I wanted you to know how grateful Kevin and I both are for all you've helped us accomplish thus far. I plan on sending you pictures, and you may also use our example if you ever need another success story, and of course we will be keeping you up to date on our progress!!!

"Very" Happy Trails,
Cathy

Ljufur - Told by his owner, Judy Ryder

I met Ljufur one year ago. When I went to see him, he ran round and round from the trainer who was trying to catch him. He had these big bulges near his jaw and I asked the trainer what they were. He didn't really know, he said all the horses had them. I rode Ljufur--he's a big, solid guy--but he paid no attention to me, wouldn't stand for mounting, just barged and dragged me all over the place. His mouth was very hard and he had issues with confinement under saddle.

We have been working on many things since Ljufur arrived here to live with us. He always came to me, so I never had to chase him down. Since his mouth was dead to the bit, we switched to a rope halter and he became light and responsive. He learned to stand for mounting. His confinement issues slowly went away and he had no reason to drag me around. The bulges near his jaw, I found out, were brace muscles and they have shrunk in size to almost nothing.

In this past year, Ljufur has made tremendous strides. The trainer had told me that between his farm of origin and importation to the US, Ljufur was owned by an alcoholic guy who did not treat his horses well. I always felt that part of Ljufur was "missing" and that his eyes were not as bright as they could be. He looked a little sad.

I asked Carla to do a "reading" on Ljufur. She graciously accepted; and this all happened via e-mail All she asked for was an identifying mark. About the only thing I could give her is that his whorl is between his eyes, off center to the left by one degree.

Carla wrote back and gave me some information which was very relative to Ljufur. She talked about the "only" tree that we have in pasture and how he likes to stand by it. And that he missed being with the baby colt (I had just separated the small herd into two parts). Carla mentioned his anxiety with bits and confinement. And that he had lost part of his soul somewhere between his birth place and the US.

One of the most dramatic things Carla mentioned was that one of Ljufur's favorite things was the lady who rode him who rubbed his nose on the left side in a way that he really liked. Well, that has to be me, because as we ride he gets treats slipped into the left side of his mouth!

Carla did a soul retrieval for Ljufur and checked back to see how he was doing. Ljufur is doing very well. His eyes have a twinkle in them. He has more life in his step. I can "draw" him to me with body language. And one of the nicest things is that he nickers so softly to me when we're together. He never did that before!

Marakesh:

Marakesh is a very young mare who is pregnant and is completely untrained. Her owner Michelle was concerned about her physically and emotionally, and she asked me to communicate with her and help her if I could.

Here is the communication I sent to Michelle after the session:

I saw Marakesh. She is lonely. I did a soul retrieval and brought back Marakesh as a young filly, still nursing. And I also brought back love from her mother, sister and brother. My spirits said that there may be trouble with the upcoming foaling, so we did a power animal retrieval to help with the foaling that will be coming soon. I think it will be a black foal. Marakesh warned me that she will protect the baby from being taken away from her. She thinks everything gets taken away. I told her you loved her, and she said she knew that.
I told her she needed to accept that you have to handle her, put a halter on her, and be able to touch her all over, because she may need that help when the foal comes. I told her if a vet were there that it was to help the baby, and she acknowledged my words. I showed her that it would be safe if you put a body wrap on her (TTeam training idea) and then scratched her mane. She wants grain when you do that. I got the feeling that she might need more nutritious grain now. You should make a big deal about giving it to her, and use it as a way to approach her. She will be willing to accept your love.

I also sent Michelle a description of her home as I saw it in my journey. Michelle wrote the following note after she read my messages:

Hello, it is me again. :>) Just had to THANK YOU one more time for the reading that you did on Marakesh. All of the stuff that you said was so true it was scary. You said that Marakesh was going to have her colt soon and we are expecting it any day. You said that she would fight to keep it cause she feels that everything gets taken away. When she was 6 months old we pulled her from her mother and moved her here with her brother and her half sister. Then just 10 months ago we got rid of her brother and her half sister. You told her that we would have to be able to catch her and put a halter on her in case there was trouble when she has the baby and up until three days before you did the reading she had a halter on but my husband felt that it was getting to small and took it off to put a bigger one on but she broke loose and he could never get it on her. You said that when she has the baby and we have to touch her that she wants us to feed her grain when we do it. Well the only time she ever lets us touch her is when she is busy eating her grain. You also said that you felt she needed more grain right now and that was right cause we had been out for almost a week. The only part I didn't not understand was that you said that her colt might be black. She is not black, her mother isn't black, the father has no black and her father is pure white. But I a prying that it is a black colt cause all my life that is what I have wanted. My husband didn't really believe in you as much as I did so I asked you to tell me anything you saw around my place when you did the reading and you told me that you saw a river/stream, there is a fast running creek not 200 ft from my house. You said that you saw a mobile home and that is what I live in. You also said that there was an older model truck with rounded fenders and you saw that where I lived was very hilly and pretty. I live way out in the country and my husband has a 1970 chevy, which has rounded fenders. So needless to say after I showed that to my husband he is a believer. You also told me that Marakesh might have trouble when she foals and I was already worried about that, but the fact that you said that she would fight to keep her baby let me know that they both would be OK. I have called a vet and he is on stand by in case we need him ASAP. And I have you to thank for it. My husband said he wasn't worried about it and didn't want me to call the vet but after the reading and what you said that was the first thing he told me to do. So I will keep in touch and let you know how it goes. Thank you so much, you very well might have saved Marakesh and her foal. I owe you a lot. God bless you!

Rio Faces Her Fears

Rio was very afraid of getting into trailers and had major problems withstanding her shoeing sessions. Her new person, HM, requested healing to ease her fears and help for her difficulties during shoeing.

Carla's journey revealed had two major traumas was when she was a yearling or maybe two, when she was being treated, but felt defeated and scared and violated. The spirits performed soul retrieval for Rio, bringing back those soul parts she had lost during these traumatic events. Carla also saw that she had been quicked on her left hoof on the inside. It was a very minor quicking, and the farrier may not have known it - but she did! The spirits gave HM some massage exercises to try with her to help her along.

Rio told Carla that the reason she is afraid of trailers is that they are dark, closed in and they make her go places where she feels traumatized. The spirits suggested that you do three things: Work on getting her to step forward with a cue, and lock that cue in without the trailer being a part of the training. Then introduce the trailer and use the cue. Also use food as a bribe. Once she is in feed her a "real meal" of grain then let her come out. DON'T use a butt rope as it will evoke those rear end fears she has. Be calm and gentle at all times. She needs to forget fear

After the healing, Rio has an appointment with the farrier and HM writes:

"Thanks so much. I truly believe that she stood so well for her right rear and stood almost perfectly for her left rear due to the help you provided her. I truly think shoeing went amazingly well. You see, Rio hasn't been turned out since Sunday because she messed her shoe up on Monday. So all this was accomplished with a horse that used to "explode" when this horse has not been able to be turned out for almost a week!

Carla, Sunday my hubby was out helping me trailer load. I had him stand in the front part of the trailer and I loaded/unloaded Rio. Then I had him stand on the right side, next to the chest bar and I loaded/unloaded Rio. Then he stood in the middle and I loaded Rio and he petted her and I unloaded Rio. Then he stood at the end of the trailer and I loaded Rio. He petted her and I asked him to pet her rear. He did. She did not move her feet, but remained in the trailer……… Then I unloaded her and we quit for the day…….. Thank you so much and I am so proud of her that she is able to face her fears!"

Winza Gets the Cougar Off His Back and Gets a New Saddle!

Winza spooks and shies SO HARD that her person, JM, usually falls off. "….and I keep putting off riding him because I don't like falling off! I have always thought if my horse and I could just communicate about this we could resolve it. I would like to hear Winza feelings/memories of the first few days that we met, because it is an amazing story and I have always felt that it was nothing short of magical. Also, , does the current saddle fit ok?"

During the journey, Winza tells Carla he is scared because green monster-like things that look like vines, come out and grab his legs…... "He believes he is being attacked by dangerous creatures. When he shies, he is seeing an image of a cat clinging to his side like a cougar is attacking him. The spirits I work with cleared him of the presence of the monsters and gave him a great deal of protection. We took him to the upper world were a wonderful old man spirit worked with him, extracting the fears from Winza's body…. and filling him with power and support. He will stay with Winza and help him overcome the fears and problems. Carla discovers…."You do seem to need a different saddle. First, because that one isn't quite right in the withers -seemed to narrow, and second, because you could use a better seat for you. I was shown that your leg moves too far forward when you are relaxed, and thus when he shies you are more easily moved off balance."

After the healing, JM writes:
"I don't know if words can describe how lucky I feel to have contacted you and to have you help me with Winza. He is the BEST horse, he charms over anyone he comes into contact with, and it breaks my heart to think he has had to deal with the cougar/vine monsters all these years (BUT how great to have finally fixed the problem!).
The leg positioning thing REALLY hits home because while Winza and I were living in Colorado we took a dressage lesson and I was told I needed to work on keeping my legs further back. Thank you again. I am sure you hear this a lot, but you have given Winza and I a new brighter chapter in our lives."

The Importance of Being Skumur (told by his person J.)
"I recently received a gelding in a trade situation. He is a 13 year old Icelandic, born and raised on the same farm in a herd of 25. When his owner brought him to me, I had planned to put him in a separate pen for a few days, but the owner didn't like that idea, saying Skumur couldn't be alone. Also, she wanted to know how tall my fences were--5 feet--and said he'd jump them. Oh, great.

We put Skumur in a paddock with one other horse. I automatically reached to take off the halter, and the owner cautioned me not to take it off as I would never be able to catch him, and that he'd had the halter on all his life.

Hmmmm. Couldn't be alone, jumped fences, couldn't be caught. I was beginning to think I hadn't been told all I needed to know before making a decision to take him.

Well, leaving the halter on was not right with me, so off it came. I spent a little time in the paddock with the horse. He seemed pretty catchable to me. A young gal was watching all of this and wanted to try it, so in she came and practiced with Skumur. He seemed pretty willing, so after a while, I asked the gal if she wanted to ride him, put on a rope halter with reins, and gave her a leg up. The owner (or should I say, previous owner) was quick to caution: Be careful, he sometimes acts crazy when he's ridden. Oh, wonderful! Another new insight. Skumur carried the gal around the paddock for a while with no problems.

I asked Carla to give me a quick reading on Skumur and this is what she told me: Skumur said he wanted to "be important". He wanted to lead the way through rough trails and be responsible. He was not ready for a soul retrieval at the time.

One day, I was riding Ljufur in the back pasture and my husband, who had to give up riding due to a disability several years ago, wandered out back and asked if there was a horse he could ride. Wow. To get him back on a horse would be great. I confidently walked over to Skumur and telepathically said to him: You wanted to be important and responsible. Now's your chance. You will have my husband's life in your hands.

Rope halter and reins again; a leg up and we're off. We rode around the back pasture for a while with no problems. Skumur, the "uncatchable, herd-bound, jumping, crazy" Icelandic has a new lease on life. He sure seems to enjoy living here, and we love him!
Thanks, Carla, for your help with him.
J.

Harley Tells His Story

LM asks about Harley, her 11 year old white appaloosa gelding: "I would like to know what has happened to him in his lifetime; if he is happy with me and if I am doing anything which is causing him pain or fear, anger or frustration, etc."

Carla's Journey : "Harley took me back through his life in pretty good detail. He is really happy with you. He showed me how you work with him on the ground, stretching his legs and touching him. He showed me how he likes to rub you with his head, and how you look at him with that expression to get him to stop, which he respects but thinks is really funny…..He showed me that you ride him differently from other people, that you are using your legs on him and getting him to leg yield, and that it is interesting and fun. He wants to stay with you forever.

I found that he had a bad infection in his neck/chest …I did an extraction of the residual intrusions (spiritual, not physical) and blew in some healing power. I also found that his rear fetlocks are weak, like he has had a bad case of wind puffs at one point. So you need to watch them.

he wants to run into the wind, with you holding his mane and hanging on. I got that that meant you were going to learn about communication with all animals and spirits from Harley, and that it would make both of you fly. So congratulations on having a really great horse friend. I like him a whole lot!"

LM writes:

"Thank you so much for your kind words about this fabulous horse. He is as beautiful inside as he is outside. I will definitely be passing my recommendations about you and your web site on to others. I heard about Carla's readings through a friend and since Harley and I are in the process of learning how to communicate with one another, I decided to ask Carla to help me with his background and thoughts. What an eye opener!! So many of the things Carla said clicked into place and Harley and I were on the road to communicating better immediately. She also pin pointed several very exact and obscure things that Harley and I do together. I plan on listening to my tape of her session with him over and over so I can continue to extract ways to communicate with my horse."

Good Day and the Earth Mother

VS is concerned about Good Day, a 12 year old bay
"I sense he may not be happy - Is something really bothering him? Is he in pain? Is he unhappy with me? Is he frustrated with me? Is he worried? Does he not like his neighbors? Is he depressed?"

On the journey, Good Day reveals to Carla that he feels the earth trembling under his feet and he is afraid he is standing on a great fault in the earth. He is afraid of the earth rocking and trembling. ": Did you have an earthquake?…. we went through his body and discovered a misplaced thing in the small of his back. …like a crystal, giving him fearful information about earth cycles and the universe. My spirit said the thing didn't belong in GD so we removed it. Then my spirit gathered up a handful of dirt and formed and being from it and placed it in the horse where the other thing was removed. This earth will reconnect GD with the earth "mother" returning his sense of security about the earth, and giving him a healthy relationship with it. He said he felt much better after we were done."

VS writes: "Wow......thanks so much! I had many, many ideas about what could be bothering GD, but nothing that would have come even close to what you found. He has been through so many earthquakes! The day I bought him was the day of the San Francisco earthquake in 1989 and we were both in the middle of the Northridge earthquake in '94. We have 'em all the time and we both felt the 7+ one about a month ago that was way out on the desert. I truly never thought they bothered him.......I thought he was just so used to them."
